Level 4 Head Professionals Course
Picture
The Tennis Head Professional Award certifies coaches who demonstrate excellence in performance coaching, leadership, and programme management. It is designed for professionals who oversee coaching teams, player development systems, and the commercial operations of a tennis facility or academy. This award combines advanced on-court expertise with strategic, leadership, and business acumen, preparing candidates for senior coaching and management roles in tennis organisations worldwide. The course is made up of 4 modules and delivered as a total online learning programme enabling you to learn and train in your own time.

Entry Requirement
  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Minimum of 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time coaching experience
  • Hold a recognized advanced certification (e.g. ICA Professional, RPT National Pro, ITF Level 2, LTA Level 3+, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead programmes and mentor other coaches.
  • Endorsement from a recognised tennis organization/club or senior coach
Course Content
MODULE 1

Create Progressive Programmes for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Players

Learning Outcomes
Understand Player Development Pathways
  • Explain the principles of progressive player development in tennis.
  • Describe the technical, tactical, physical, and psychological characteristics of beginner, intermediate, and advanced players.
  • Identify the key learning priorities at each stage of development.
Design Level-Appropriate Training Programmes
  • Design structured training sessions that meet the developmental needs of beginner, intermediate, and advanced players.
  • Apply progressive skill development principles when planning drills and practice activities.
  • Structure sessions that build from fundamental skills to advanced performance competencies.
Apply Progressive Coaching Methods
  • Select appropriate teaching methods, drills, and activities that match the player’s stage of development.
  • Progress activities from simple to complex and from controlled practice to match-based situations.
  • Adapt exercises to maintain engagement, challenge, and skill development.
Integrate Tactical and Physical Development
  • Incorporate tactical awareness and decision-making into intermediate and advanced training sessions.
  • Introduce age-appropriate conditioning and movement development within tennis programmes.
  • Design practices that integrate technical, tactical, and physical elements simultaneously.
Create Competitive Learning Environments
  • Design practice situations that simulate match play and competitive scenarios.
  • Develop activities that build confidence, resilience, and problem-solving under pressure.
  • Use competitive drills to help players transfer training skills into match performance.
Evaluate and Adjust Training Programmes

  • Modify programmes to suit individual learning rates and developmental needs.

Club Operations, Business, and Marketing

Head Pro as a Leader – Managing People, Committees, Parents, Players & Support Staff

Course Assessment Overview
Each module is assessed using the following:
  1. Applied Task – Participants demonstrate practical skills by designing programmes, plans, or management strategies relevant to the module.
  2. Grading:
  • Pass: Meets module requirements and shows understanding.
  • Distinction: Exceeds requirements, shows strategic thinking, and high-level application.
Head  Certification
Certification and Progression
Upon successful completion, candidates receive the Tennis Head Professional Award Certificate, recognising them as qualified to lead coaching programmes, manage facilities, and mentor staff.
Progression Pathways:
  • ICA Level 4 Performance Pro or Level 5 Director of Tennis
  • ​Access to advanced CPD workshops in leadership, performance analysis, and business innovation
