Level 4 Head Professionals Course

The Tennis Head Professional Award certifies coaches who demonstrate excellence in performance coaching, leadership, and programme management. It is designed for professionals who oversee coaching teams, player development systems, and the commercial operations of a tennis facility or academy. This award combines advanced on-court expertise with strategic, leadership, and business acumen, preparing candidates for senior coaching and management roles in tennis organisations worldwide.

Entry Requirement
  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Minimum of 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time coaching experience
  • Hold a recognized advanced certification (e.g. ICA Professional, RPT National Pro, ITF Level 2, LTA Level 3+, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead programmes and mentor other coaches.
  • Endorsement from a recognised tennis organization/club or senior coach
Course Content
Module 1: Programme Design and Player Pathway Management
Aim:
To design, implement, and manage structured tennis programmes that cater to varying player abilities, participation motives, and competitive levels.
Learning Outcomes:
• Create progressive programmes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced players.
• Develop and balance competition and recreational/social tennis pathways.
• Design inclusive programmes that support player retention and engagement.
• Integrate physical, technical, and tactical development within structured sessions.
• Monitor and evaluate player progress across different participation levels.
Assessment:
• Submission of a comprehensive programme plan outlining development pathways for both competitive and recreational players.
Module 2: Leadership and Team Management
Aim: To cultivate leadership and communication skills necessary for managing a coaching and operations team.
Learning Outcomes:
  • Lead, motivate, and evaluate assistant coaches and staff.
  • Deliver effective feedback and manage performance.
  • Resolve conflicts and foster a collaborative culture.
  • Align team operations with club or academy goals.
Assessment:
  • Leadership case study
Module 3: Club Operations, Business, and Marketing
Aim: To develop the managerial and commercial skills required to sustain and grow a tennis business.
Learning Outcomes:
  • Create and manage simple budgets and operational plans.
  • Design and market club programmes and community events.
  • Build partnerships and sponsorships to enhance revenue streams.
  • Use digital marketing and data analytics to drive participation.
Assessment:
  • Business plan submission
  • Presentation on a marketing or sponsorship strategy
Module 5: Ethics, Inclusion, and Safeguarding
Aim: To reinforce ethical and inclusive practices in coaching and management.
Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply ethical decision-making frameworks in daily operations.
  • Promote inclusion, equality, and accessibility in tennis programmes.
  • Ensure safeguarding compliance for all participants.
  • Model professional behaviour and values as a role model coach.
Assessment:
  • Written reflection or case study on ethical practice
  • Safeguarding and equality knowledge test
Module 6: Project and Final Assessment
Aim: To integrate all knowledge and skills through a practical, real-world project.
Learning Outcomes:
  • Design and execute a full tennis programme, campaign, or initiative.
  • Demonstrate effective planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Showcase leadership, innovation, and measurable impact.
Assessment:
  • Submission of a final project
Module 7: Practical Coaching Programme Delivery and Mentorship
Aim: To provide candidates with hands-on experience delivering a coaching programme within a club environment under the guidance of a mentor.
Learning Outcomes:
  • Plan and deliver a structured half-day coaching session for players at varying levels.
  • Work with a mentor to refine session design, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrate on-court coaching skills, group management, and inclusive practice.
  • Reflect on performance and apply mentor feedback to improve coaching methodology.
Assessment:
  • Practical coaching evaluation based on session delivery, player engagement, and adaptability.
  • Mentor feedback and reflective portfolio documenting planning, execution, and learning points.

Performance Professional Certification and Assessment
Certification and Progression
Upon successful completion, candidates receive the Tennis Head Professional Award Certificate, recognising them as qualified to lead coaching programmes, manage facilities, and mentor staff.
Progression Pathways:
  • ICA Level 4 Performance Pro or Level 5 Director of Tennis
  • ​Access to advanced CPD workshops in leadership, performance analysis, and business innovation
