Level 2 Tennis International Assistant Coaches Course
The Level 2 Tennis International Assistant Coaches Course is designed to equip emerging coaches with the essential knowledge, skills, and practical methods required to support player development in modern tennis environments. This course builds on foundational coaching principles and introduces more advanced techniques in stroke production, movement, tactical awareness, communication, and session delivery. With a strong emphasis on on-court application, participants will learn how to assist lead coaches effectively, contribute to structured training programmes, and create a positive, safe, and engaging learning experience for players of all ages and abilities. This course provides a clear pathway for coaches seeking to progress within the international coaching framework and confidently support players on their developmental journey. The course is open to anyone aged 14+
Course Content
1. Introduction to the Assistant Coach Role
Understanding basic tactical situations:
- Understanding the role of an Assistant Coach vs. Lead Coach
- Supporting the delivery of coaching sessions
- Basic expectations: reliability, professionalism, communication
- Introduction to ethical behaviour and safeguarding awareness
- Working effectively within a coaching team
- Assisting with warm-ups, cool-downs, and basic routines
- How to observe players and identify simple technical needs
- Providing safe, clear, and concise instructions
- Understanding session structure and helping with organisation
- How and when to provide positive, age-appropriate feedback
- Foundations of technique: grips, ready position, spacing, and contact point
- Assisting with basic stroke introduction:
- Forehand – simple cues and beginner progressions
- Backhand – one-handed or two-handed basics
- Volley – positioning and simple feeding patterns
- Serve – basic action and safe learning progressions
- Feeding skills: hand feeds and simple racket feeds
- Setting up skill-based drills and activities
Understanding basic tactical situations:
- Hitting cross-court
- Rallying with consistency
- Moving opponents and court awareness
- Helping players understand simple decision-making cues
- Supporting tactical themes set by the Lead Coach
- Basic doubles positioning fundamentals
- ABCs: Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed
- Simple conditioning games appropriate for beginners
- Supporting safe movement patterns and recovery steps
- Assisting with basic injury-prevention routines
- Supporting focus and good effort behaviours
- Helping players manage frustration and stay positive
- Creating an inclusive and supportive training environment
- Understanding how to adapt communication for age and ability
- Understanding equipment basics: balls, rackets, court zones
- Player safety checks: hydration, warm-up, safe spacing
- Emergency awareness: who to contact and what to do
- Risk management when assisting busy group sessions
- Practising feeding skills, drill setup, and organisation
- Supervising small groups under guidance
- Receiving feedback on communication, observation, and support skills
- Demonstrating competence in assisting across beginner-to-intermediate levels
International Professional Coach Certification and Assessment
Upon successful completion of the Level 2 Assistant Coach Course, participants will undergo an assessment to evaluate their coaching proficiency and ability to apply advanced coaching principles in practical coaching scenarios. Certification will be awarded to candidates who demonstrate mastery of course content and performance coaching competencies.
On successful completion of the course and test you will be awarded the grade of Assistant Coach. Certification is issued by Tennis International and the International Coaches Association.
