Level 1 Tennis Assistant Course
The Level 1 Tennis Assistant Award is designed for young people who are excited to start their coaching journey and support players on the court. This course introduces the basic skills, knowledge, and practical methods needed to assist in tennis sessions, including fundamental stroke techniques, movement, and simple tactics. Participants will also learn how to communicate clearly, help lead activities, and create a fun, safe, and positive environment for players of all abilities. With a strong focus on hands-on experience, this course gives young coaches the confidence to assist more experienced coaches and take the first step in developing their coaching skills. The course is aimed at anyone aged 12+
Course Content
The Level 1 Tennis Assistant Award is designed for young people aged 12–14 who want to start helping on the tennis court. This course introduces the essential skills and knowledge needed to support coaching sessions safely and confidently.
1. Getting Started as a Tennis Assistant
Learn what it means to be an Assistant Coach and how this role differs from a Lead Coach. Understand how to support sessions, communicate clearly, be reliable, and act responsibly on and off the court. You’ll also get introduced to safeguarding, ethical behaviour, and working as part of a coaching team.
2. Basic Coaching Skills
Discover how to help with warm-ups, cool-downs, and simple routines. Learn to observe players, provide clear instructions, and give positive feedback that encourages confidence and enjoyment. You’ll also practice helping to organise sessions so they run smoothly.
3. Intro to Tennis Technique
Learn the basics of grips, ready positions, and contact points. Assist with beginner strokes including forehands, backhands, volleys, and serves, using safe and simple progressions. You’ll practice feeding balls and helping set up fun skill-based drills.
4. Simple Tactics
Understand the basics of rallying, hitting cross-court, moving around the court, and positioning in doubles. Support players in making simple decisions and reinforce tactical themes set by the Lead Coach.
5. Physical Movement and Fitness
Help players develop agility, balance, coordination, and speed through fun movement games. Support safe movement patterns, warm-ups, and injury-prevention activities suitable for beginners.
6. Supporting Mental Skills and Positive Behaviour
Encourage confidence, motivation, and enjoyment. Help players focus, manage frustration, and stay positive. Learn to adapt your communication for different ages and abilities, creating a supportive and inclusive environment.
7. Safety, Risk, and Organisation
Learn how to set up courts safely, manage equipment, and support player safety with hydration checks, spacing, and warm-ups. Understand basic emergency procedures and how to manage risk when assisting busy sessions.
8. Practical Coaching Experience
Assist Lead Coaches during live sessions, practise feeding and drill setup, and supervise small groups under guidance. Receive feedback to improve your communication, observation, and support skills, and demonstrate your ability to assist across beginner-to-intermediate levels.
This Level 1 course gives young coaches the foundation to assist Lead Coaches confidently, develop practical coaching skills, and contribute to fun, safe, and engaging tennis sessions. It’s the first step on the pathway to becoming a skilled tennis coach.

International Professional Coach Certification and Assessment
Upon successful completion of the Level 1 Tennis Assistant Award, participants will be assessed to demonstrate their understanding of basic coaching skills and their ability to assist safely and effectively in practical coaching sessions.
Candidates who show competence in supporting Lead Coaches, delivering simple drills, and applying fundamental coaching principles will be awarded the Level 1 Tennis Assistant Award. Certification is issued jointly by Tennis International and the International Coaches Association.
